Who is entitled to the allowance?


An attendance allowance is available to men and women up to retirement age, who are insured by the National Insurance Institute and require a great deal of assistance by another person for routine activities (dressing, eating, washing, mobility within the home and control of bodily functions), or who require constant supervision to prevent a danger to their lives or to the lives of others.

A person who is one of the following is also entitled to the allowance:

  • A person receiving dialysis treatment at least twice a week.
  • A person who has received an organ transplant (kidney, heart, pancreas, lung, liver) or bone marrow from a donor - for the first six months from the date of the transplant. A person who has received an autogenous bone marrow transplant - for three months from the date of the transplant.
  • An oncology patient who is receiving medical treatment from the list of treatments that appears in this circular.

A person who is living in an institution that provides medical, nursing or rehabilitation services is not entitled to the allowance.
